WHAT IS VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION?
Vestibular Rehabilitation Dizziness (“room spinning”), vertigo and balance problems are symptoms commonly experienced in an adult population. These symptoms often have a negative impact on a persons’ quality of life, making it difficult for them to perform and enjoy their normal daily activities. Many of these symptoms can be treated using vestibular rehabilitation techniques.
TREATMENT PLAN ELEMENTS
The physiotherapist will take a detailed history of your symptoms. They will then perform a thorough assessment to determine the intervention needed. A management plan may include:
- Specific corrective techniques
- Eye and head movement exercises
- Exercises to improve standing balance and walking
- Education and advice on improving confidence & function
- Advice on falls reduction/prevention.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The most common form of dizziness and balance disorder is BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). This is a disorder of the inner ear resulting in episodes of intense dizziness with certain head movements.
Another common cause of dizziness is a reduction in the function of one or both sides of the vestibular system in the inner ear. This can lead to a feeling of motion when there is none, nausea and reduced balance. There are a number of conditions that can cause this including labrynthitis, vestibular neuritis, and other inner ear disorders.
Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based programme to encourage the central nervous system to compensate for problems in the inner ear. Following thorough examination our specialist physiotherapists will develop a personalised exercise-based management plan to deal with your issue.

”Top class service from Michael Gallagher - many times over the years has "fixed me" with sensible and practical solutions and advice, including one occasion where others had suggested more drastic actions which would have had serious implications for myself. Highly recommended!

”Thanks to Michael and the team at Baily Point Physio. After visiting them in August with knee problems they sorted me out with orthotic insoles and an exercise routine. Since then (2months ago) I have climbed Kilimanjaro twice with no knee problems – a great result. Highly recommend them.
