ABOUT NORAH KYNE
Graduating from University College Dublin in 1982, Norah spent many years working in University Hospital Galway, (UHG), holding senior roles in Medical Rehabilitation and Practice Tutor before moving to a Physiotherapy Manager 1 role in 2000 and ultimately Physiotherapy Manager 3 role in 2014. Within this timeframe Norah gained clinical experience in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.; she also spent time in Yerevan, Armenia, in the aftermath of the 1988 earthquake, working with the Irish Red Cross as an educator to local therapy students.
Norah developed an interest in treating lymphoedema secondary to cancer management and in 2005, became certified in Combined Decongestive Therapy. This involves training in manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), skin care, exercise and compression treatment. Continuing professional development in treating this condition has included education in specialised Lymphoedema Clinics in Austria, (Vodder School) and Germany, (Foldi School), as well as educational reviews in Ireland.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Norah manages a mixed caseload, including treating individuals with lymphoedema, (primary and secondary), lipoedema, chronic oedema, post – operative manual lymphatic drainage and other lymph related disorders. Initial assessment involves a full assessment of the condition, measurements and treatment planning. Indication for compression and appropriate type of compression is also included. Treatment aims to decrease swelling, improve skin condition, measure for and source appropriate compression garment, develop appropriate exercise programme, instruct in and facilitate self-management. Treatment time is approximately one hour per session. Overall cost will depend on the individual patient needs which may include compression bandages and compression garments.
