Lymphoedema refers to swelling, which can occur in any part of the body, although most commonly seen in an arm or leg. It is caused by damage or malformation of the lymphatic system.
There are two main types:
- Primary – a poorly developed lymphatic system from birth
- Secondary – trauma, surgery or radiation therapy may damage the lymphatic system.
